A new venture

I decided to take an online class with textile artist Anne Griffith who you can find here and here. The entire course is presented in units and is expected to take around a year to complete. I’m no stranger to online studies so feel confident that I’ll do very well. I did half of my graphic design studies online after all.
The first unit begins with basics of design, the first section is mark making which I was just mulling over two posts back. I am gathering materials but also delving into studies.  Check this link out-Tate. I love the dry, technical, art critique/ history part of creativity! The reason I enjoy it is that it inspires me to see what  artists have done and how they evolved as well as who influenced them. And the Tate link has a diverse selection of examples.

I havent used tags or categories on this blog yet, but for this study I will use “ textile class” to keep organized.
Let the fun begin!

  1. I wish you well on your new course! It's good to have a whole year, absorbing what you need to. I look forward to seeing what you explore. I checked out that link, and liked how it delved into mark making as a genre of it's own. Rather than observing individual paintings, and noticing an artists style - the link asked you to consider the different way, marks were made through them all. Handy, when you're studying a particular subject. :)

    1. Thank you Chris. Yes, its important to take enough time. I look at my online graphic work and cant help but see how much better it might have been had I had a less strict deadline. Having said that, I still need to discipline myself in this new interest. I can take too much time, but its more likely that out of habit, I will take too little;)
Yes, the Tate did a good job of presenting the topic in a very concise way. Of course marks are signatures to some artists and contribute to personal style such as Keith Haring and Jean Michel Baptiste but if we can learn to just look and appreciate marks on their own merit, to me, thats a whole new vocabulary.

  2. Hi Linda, apologies for my long absence. Lovely to know you have taken up this new venture, I am certain it will be absorbing as well as interesting. I will go and click onto your links and find out more about it.
    How are you?
Spring is trying its best here to get started, though we have had several hiccups of snow Even Easter Sunday we had snow. But the spring flowers are resilient and are beginning to perk up their heads again.
I went into the allotment with hubby to help him, As he had that nasty flu which was doing the rounds here. It took it out of him..
I felt much better for getting soil beneath my nails again :-D

Sending lots of love and Blessings xxx Sue

    1. Though I have missed you, I’m equally guilty too so no apologies necessary my dear. We had a blizzard two days ago! The snow is melting now but its very unusual to be still in winter so late in the year. I’ve had little time to work intensively on the class but resuming in the next day or so. I think things are settling down. fingers crossed. Sending love to you as always.
