Applique

Maybe if you click, this image will be clearer. I cannot remember who designed this quilt. It was a block of the month club that I joined in the early 2000’s and is representative of Africa. I wanted to make my son a quilt since my sewing was almost always focused on my daughter. Boy clothes were beyond my skill set at the time. I envisioned that he would take it to college with him, but by the time I finished it, a growth spurt showed me that I ( 5’1”) had birthed a giant. He is 6’3” these days and this quilt was meant for a regular sized twin bed.I really adored this quilt because if you look at the first square and the last, what is depicted is a loving family.
I love applique and so recently delved into it again via a Hawaiian  Quilt pattern, “Breadfruit”.

This pattern is just one version of the design. A friend has a breadfruit with much more intricate cut outs. I opted for modern fabric and simple grid machine quilting.  I might revisit to make another cushion cover but I have two other quilts in the planning stages and one that needs to be finished which is not applique. The one I am preparing for my husbands hospital stay though, will be applique.
The pattern is known as  Orange Leaf and is often multicolored on white ground.

I am cutting out as much as I can ahead of time and won’t start working on it until we are called down to Madison. It will have other colors....these are just some of my greens. The beauty of small scale applique is that it is portable. Unlike other handwork, it can withstand disruption so if called away it won’t ruin anything.  Its done by hand. Any pressing can wait.....

Have you done applique?

  1. What beautiful work is that Quilt and I can see the amount of work that had gone into it. As to applique, I did a little once upon a time upon an Apron.. I bought a plane apron and put flowers on it. But nothing fancy.
I have made cushion covers in the quilting fashion.. Simply because when We first got married we did not have much money.. So I cut up some old summer dresses that had worn and a zip had broken to make four cushion covers.. I stuffed them with more clothes destined for the rag bag.. LOL Those were the days..
    :-) Make do and Mend..
Lovely to see your post, sorry I am late..
And sending much love and healing hugs your way xx <3 Sue

    1. Oh my goodness Sue. I was not notified of this comment so please forgive me for my own late response. I love the make do and mend aesthetic to a point actually. I know though that nowadays, everything is so expensive that is getting harder to discard so I hope more people will become more inventive:) I checked in on your blog a little while ago and you hadn't written anything so I will go check again. Love to you Sue. You are the best!
